Abstract

Oral hygiene practices are fundamental to maintaining oral health, yet growing evidence suggests their influence extends far beyond the oral cavity. Poor oral hygiene contributes to the development of periodontal diseases and chronic oral infections, which may serve as sources of systemic inflammation and microbial dissemination. This manuscript examines the impact of oral hygiene practices on systemic health outcomes, emphasizing biological mechanisms, clinical associations, and preventive strategies. It explores the role of oral biofilm control in reducing systemic disease risk, highlights connections between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory conditions, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and overall immune function. The paper underscores the importance of integrated dental–medical care and patient education in promoting holistic health and improving long-term health outcomes.
